History of the establishment of the school. Period of activity.

Already two years after its foundation (1928), the department of MAHNV took the first steps to create a scientific school of heat exchange in single-phase and two-phase systems with research, development, and implementation of appropriate equipment.

Yes, under the leadership of Prof. V.Yu. Vasiliev, a large scientific team was formed, which was engaged in the mining business. In many ways, thanks to the cooling, drying, and air-conditioning units developed by his employees, the operation of the deep mines of Donbas became possible.

These works were continued in the post-war years, when the head of the department became the professor, Ph.D. Chornobylsky Y.I. Employees of the department, together with employees of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and employees of the mining industry, carried out developments dedicated to cooling, drying, and air conditioning in deep mines. The results are summarized in 3 publications, among which Y. I. Chornobylskyi, O. A. Kremnyova, and A. S. Chavdarov should be noted. “Heat-using installations for air conditioning”, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, 1958.

However the scientific interests of Prof. Chornobylsky Y.I. were much wider. Back in 1938, he defended his thesis on thermocompression evaporation, and for many years in advance outlined the future direction of scientific research for himself and his students.

Starting from 1947, the first publications in this area appeared: heat transfer during boiling (1947), heat transfer through a ribbed surface (1948), steam condensation in horizontal pipes (co-author S.A. Horodynska, 1954, 1950), heat transfer to boiling solutions in vertical circuits and pipes (co-authors R.Ya. Ladiev, 1955, A.G. Bondar, 1956), studies of heat transfer during boiling of freon-12 in a large volume (V.V. Ratiani, 1955), with boiling of binary mixtures (co-author Lukach Yu. Yu.), during boiling crisis (co-author M. I. Palishchev, 1962, 1963) during heat transfer during boiling (co-author S. V. Sydorenko, 1968, 1970, 1958).

The scientific direction of heat exchange in single-phase and two-phase systems became basic in the creation of new scientific directions of scientific work of the department: film processes and devices, creation of equipment for obtaining and processing polymers, intensification of drying and granulation processes, etc. The results of the work are summarized in the textbook “Machines and Apparatus of Chemical Industries” created by scientists of the department, which had three editions. Under the leadership of Y.I. Chernobyl in the period from 1945 to 1973, 25 candidates and doctors of science defended their theses, including professors R.Ya.Ladiev, and Yu.Yu. Lukach, O.N. Piven, M.I. Pavlishchev, E.H. Vorontsov, A.G. Cooper, member of staff. NAS of Ukraine B.I. Bondarenko, associate professor B.A. Gaevskyi, S.A.Horodynska, Yu.M. Tananayko, V.M. Marchevskyi, S.V. Sydorenko, O.G.Zubry and others.
